When y While con Past Continuous

«When» y «while» son como los directores de escena de nuestras historias en inglés. Indican cuándo ocurren las cosas y cómo se relacionan entre sí. Usarlos correctamente con el past continuous es la clave para sonar natural al contar anécdotas.

🔍 ¿Cuál es la diferencia?

⏰ WHEN

  • Significado: «Cuando».
  • Función: Introduce una acción corta que interrumpe o ocurre en un momento concreto.
  • Tiempo que lo acompaña: Generalmente past simple.
  • I was sleeping when the phone rang.

🔄 WHILE

  • Significado: «Mientras».
  • Función: Introduce una acción larga que ocurre al mismo tiempo que otra.
  • Tiempo que lo acompaña: Generalmente past continuous.
  • While I was sleeping, the phone rang.

📌 La regla práctica

WHEN + PAST SIMPLE (la interrupción)
WHILE + PAST CONTINUOUS (la acción larga)

O lo que es lo mismo: la acción larga (en progreso) va con «while», la acción corta (que interrumpe) va con «when».

🏗️ Estructura de las oraciones

Podemos colocar «when» o «while» al principio de la oración o en medio. Si van al principio, separamos las dos partes con una coma.

📝 Usos avanzados y matices

While con dos acciones en continuo

«While» también puede usarse para conectar dos acciones largas que ocurrían simultáneamente. En este caso, ambas van en past continuous.

  • While I was cooking, my husband was setting the table.
  • While the children were playing, we were talking in the garden.

When con past continuous (excepciones)

Aunque «when» suele ir con past simple, también puede ir seguido de past continuous si queremos dar énfasis a la duración de la acción que ocurre en ese momento.

  • When I was living in London, I met my best friend. (Enfatiza el período de tiempo).

En este caso, «when» significa «durante el tiempo que» y la acción es el contexto, no la interrupción.

La puntuación: la coma

  • Si la oración empieza con «when» o «while», ponemos una coma después de la primera parte. → While I was sleeping, the phone rang.
  • Si el conector va en medio, NO usamos coma. → The phone rang while I was sleeping.

⚠️ Errores comunes con When y While

Error Incorrecto Correcto Explicación
Usar «when» con continuo para interrupción I was sleeping when the phone was ringing. I was sleeping when the phone rang. La interrupción va en simple, no en continuo.
Usar «while» con simple para acción larga While I watched TV, he arrived. While I was watching TV, he arrived. «While» introduce la acción larga, que va en continuo.
Olvidar la coma While I was sleeping the phone rang. While I was sleeping, the phone rang. Cuando «while» va al inicio, lleva coma después de la primera parte.
Confundir «when» y «while» The phone rang when I was sleeping. The phone rang while I was sleeping. Para acciones simultáneas, «while» es más preciso (aunque «when» a veces se acepta).

Ejercicio 3: Combina las oraciones

Combina las dos oraciones en una sola usando «when» o «while». Usa el conector adecuado y la estructura correcta.
